The official US Stamp for Tarzan 


  In 2012, the USPS issued this "forever" commemorative stamp to honor writer Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875-1950). First published in 1912, Burroughs is most remembered for heroic fantasy, thrilling his audience with the epic adventures of Tarzan of the Apes and John Carter of Mars. His stories were adapted for comic books and movies.

Fearful of a negative reaction and to protect his family's name, he first submitted the stories under the alias“Normal Bean,” to show that he was in his right mind. But he was quickly a success and soon was Tarzan was a cultural icon. Although in his late 60's in 1941, as a resident of Hawaii, he became a war correspondent. He returned to California after the war. At his death in 1950, he had published 70 novels.
